How Internet Security Can Save Your Identity

Internet Security has become one of the most important issues on the web today. Without internet security, your computer is vulnerable to attacks from unfriendly people who want to destroy your computer, steal your money and even take over your identity. It is happening more and more that people are finding unauthorized charges on their credit cards and phantom credit cards on their credit reports. Identity theft can ruin your life and a good internet security system is the only thing that can save you if you plan to share information on the internet through email, social networking and/or websites. This involves more than just antivirus software, though. For optimum security, you will also need a firewall, updated antivirus software and keeping up to date with the current frauds.

Firewall

A firewall is software that blocks the doors into your personal space on the internet. Basically, it is your bouncer and it holds the guest list. It has rules that it follows to filter information that comes through your connection. Your computer operating system usually has a basic firewall installed, which you are able to turn on and off as you please. This is a very basic firewall, but it does the trick for light internet use. If you are a heavy internet user, it is recommended that you either use the premium firewall offered by your antivirus company or that you download a premium one on its own. Whichever choice you make, you are going to want to make sure that your firewall is compatible with your antivirus software.

Antivirus

A good antivirus software is prominent because it will protect you from viruses like those nasty trojans, malware, adware (usually) and spyware. Viruses are nasty little bugs that lock inside your computer and are often hard to get rid of whereas malware and spyware are certain types of bugs that get in your system to send your keystrokes remotely to a monitoring device by an identity thief. Your antivirus will detect when you have been exposed to one of these bugs and stop it from taking hold of your computer. To make sure that it is doing its job, it is recommended that you do a scan with your antivirus software at least once a week, if not more. You must make sure that your antivirus is up to date as viruses and the like continually change and evolve.

Studying Scams

Studying scams may seem like an odd inclusion in this essay, however, it is a vital part of your internet security. There are several sites on the internet that compile a list of the current scams and phishing schemes to let everybody know what to look out for. Most of us are familiar with the Nigerian scam where somebody from Nigeria emails us and asks if we would help them move some money for a healthy reward; well, scams and phishing schemes are ever-changing and evolving, like viruses, and they will send out hundreds of different versions of this scam, each one more believable than the last. In order not to get caught up in one of these, you must research and make sure that you know every detail about the kinds of things scammers and ‘phishers’ do. They can be quite crafty and knowing what to look out for gives you power over them.

The object of internet security is to protect you from malicious intent by the thieves and terrorists of the internet. If you keep yourself educated and stay abreast of the current threats while maintaining a good internet security system you should stay virus and scam free. Vigilance and awareness will make your web experience feel much safer and your identity will remain yours.
